Andrew Mielcuszny - Medical Student, ATSU - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine

Presenter

Andrew Mielcuszny is a second-year medical student at A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and is from St. Louis Missouri. He received a bachelor's degree in biology in 2021 from Texas Christian University. He currently serves as the Co-President of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Club (IDD Club) at ATSU. After medical school he plans to pursue a career in internal medicine or pediatrics and would like to serve the IDD population as part of his future practice. In his free time, Andrew enjoys reading, cooking and playing with his dog.


Presentation Description - Self-advocacy in the Medical Setting:

Join ATSU Medical Students as they explain some common things that patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities may encounter at a doctor's visit. They will demonstrate the difference between good and bad encounters, as well as, demonstrating some of the more common medical equipment that might be used during an appointment. Additionally, they will present various ways patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities can advocate for themselves and be aware of how they should be treated and respected by their doctor.
